Example scenario: How to block social network category, but allow Facebook.com.

In this example scenario we will block the social networking category of websites, but allow Facebook.com, and then optionally restrict access to Facebook.com to a single device on your network. These steps will apply to any website, any category.

Step 1 - Block the Social Network category

  1. Go to www.buctools.com and click on My Account to log-in.
  2. Look for Web Filter Settings
    • Category Selection
      • Choose 'social networking'
      • Update

You have just blocked all known social networking sites on the Internet; however, you would like to allow FaceBook.com.

Step 2 - Allow Facebook.com

  1. If not already logged in, go to www.buctools.com and go to My Account
  2. Look for Web Filter Settings
    • Whitelist / Blacklist Editor
    • In the Whitelist section, under Add Whitelist Rule:
      • Enter: facebook.com
      • Add Rule
        • Save Changes

You have just blocked all known social networking websites, but have allowed Facebook.com. Now we are going to restrict access to Facebook.com to a single device on your network. This third step is optional.

Step 3 - Restrict access to Facebook.com to a single device

Before creating this rule you'll need to first find the IP Addresses of the device(s) you want to restrict facebook.com on. This guide will show you how.

  1. Log into your BUC Appliance at http://192.168.10.1
  2. Go to Firewall, then Restrictions
  3. Under Access Restrictions enter the following
    • Rule Description: block_facebook
    • Rule Applies To: Only the Following Hosts (how to find these)
      • 192.168.10.x
        • Add
      • 192.168.10.x
        • Add
    • Schedule: All Day | Every Day
    • Restricted Resources: uncheck All Network Access
      • Website URL(s): Block Only
      • Domain contains: facebook.com
        • Add
      • Add New Rule
    • Save Changes
